Quite a few of the parks in southwest Louisiana have one or two observatory trails to walk. Many lead to decks over looking the rivers or swaps, others take you through thick grass or tall trees. Almost all of these trails have signs, both precautionary and informational.
In posts before and after this one, we will be sharing the adventures from different trails in Southwest Louisiana. While trails are fun, exciting ways to get the kids out of the house and take pictures of wildlife, there are some safety rules and items that every family should have either on person or in car.
Water keeps everyone hydrated and out of the danger zone of overheating. Louisiana weather is just as hot as it is humid and if bringing young children, water is a must have.
Always wear closed toe shoes while hiking on a trail, even a short one. There are many insects, snakes and bugs that can be poisonous or cause sores. A good pair of sneakers is the best way to avoid those.
While a first aid kit should always be on your person or close by at any given time, when hiking this could easily save a life or make a boo-boo better. There are many dangers on a hike and having one of these could come in handy.
When on a hike or trail, bring a type of camera! A disposable, that one you never take out of the bag, even the one on your phone. There are lots of things to see and capturing nature in a photograph is a beautiful thing.
Nothing too heavy, but fruit or crackers will keep the little ones buzzing with energy and they are less likely to complain about being hungry during the walk.
Mosquitoes, horse flies and ticks are Louisiana's most annoying insects. Bring some bug spray to keep them away. Also, bring sunscreen, the highest SPF for you little ones, so no one goes home looking like The Crimson Horror.
Rules:
Every family needs a set of rules before they all wander off into the woods together.
Stay together. Never wander from your parents, stay where they can see you and don't touch things that may harm you.
Make a
signal call before you head down the trail, in case anyone gets lost.
Keep an eye out for
harmful creatures.
Always make sure you
know your way back.
Hikes and trails are lots of fun! I've been on many hikes in different states and they have all be a great experience. So share one with your family, but BE SAFE.
Stay safe and have fun!
